It’s totally normal for marriages to change over time and for the intense passion of the early days to settle into a different kind of companionship. And over time, your spouse may express their love for you in different ways than they did in the past. So how can you tell if they’re still head over heels for you after all these years? Experts say these are the signs to look for.

  • They look you in the eye – If their eyes are on you and not scrolling through their phone, that’s a good sign. Psychologist Zick Rubin’s research finds couples who are deeply in love look at each other 75% of the time, while regular people talking only look at each other 30 to 60% of the time.
  • They’re quick to end an argument – When your partner throws up a white flag, it shows they’re more interested in resolving the conflict and avoiding misunderstandings and hurt feelings than having to be right, according to psychologist Stan Tatkin.
  • They put the electronics away – A sure sign your spouse wants to connect? They’ll close the laptop, put down their phone and give you their undivided attention. That doesn’t mean they’ll drop what they’re doing any second you want them to, but if they’re making a concerted effort to ditch the tech for quality time, relationship expert Fawn Weaver says they’re still very much into you.
  • They know you hate doing the dishes, so they do them – After being together for years, your spouse knows your “irritation triggers” and works to avoid them, Tatkin explains. They don’t care if it’s “your turn” to do the dishes, they’ll do them so you don’t have to.
  • They make an effort to surprise you – If your partner goes out of their way to surprise you with little things that will brighten your day, Weaver says that’s a sign they still love you lots. It’s not about expensive gifts, it could be your favorite ice cream, the point is they are thinking of you and still doing small stuff to make you smile.
